The Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (OMPAN) is deeply alarmed and outraged by the reported brutalisation and unlawful detention of Owoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters.
According to multiple credible reports, Mr. Sowore was allegedly subjected to physical assault, including having his arm broken, before being forcefully taken to an undisclosed location by security operatives. These actions, if confirmed, represent not only a gross violation of his fundamental human rights but also an assault on press freedom and democratic principles in Nigeria.
As the foremost association representing digital media professionals in the country, OMPAN considers this incident a disturbing reminder of the growing impunity with which journalists and dissenting voices are being treated.
We join all well-meaning Nigerians and voices of conscience in unequivocally condemning this alleged gestapo-style operation. Such tactics have no place in a democratic society governed by the rule of law.
OMPAN therefore calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Sowore. We further urge the Nigeria Police Force and all security agencies to uphold the rights and liberties of all citizens, as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended)—particularly Sections 34, 35, and 39, which protect the rights to dignity, personal liberty, and freedom of expression, respectively.
Freedom of the press is the cornerstone of any democratic nation, and any attempt to silence critical voices must be resisted by all stakeholders committed to justice, transparency, and accountability.
