The Nigeria Professional Wrestling Federation (NPWF), under the noble leadership of President, Chief John O. Uche, has announced a new date for the much-anticipated Prof. Charles Soludo International Pro-Wrestling and Power Mike Memorial Championships. Originally slated for the last weekend of September in Awka, Anambra State’s capital, the two-day championship will now take place on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th October 2025 at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square.
This high-profile event is to mark 44th anniversary of the NPWF and is specially dedicated to honour His Excellency, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, Governor of Anambra State, whose administration has pledged notable support for the growth of wrestling and youth development in Nigeria.
“We have chosen Anambra State because of the Governor’s exemplary support for sports and youth empowerment,” Chief Uche told journalists at a mini press briefing in Lagos over the weekend. “This championship is not just a spectacle of athletic excellence; it is also a tribute to the late Chief Michael Okpala — Power Mike of Africa — who blazed the trail for professional wrestling on this continent.”
A Showcase of African Wrestling Power
The championship promises to be the largest gathering of professional wrestlers on African soil this year. Athletes from Nigeria, Uganda, Mali, Ghana, Congo and other African countries will compete in headline-grabbing bouts:
Joy Nwafor “Stylish J” (Nigeria) vs Lumumba (Uganda) — African Women’s Title Match
Angus Emeadi “Executioner” (Nigeria) vs Syndicate (Mali) — AWO Light Heavyweight Title Defense
Mightyman (NPWF Heavyweight Champion) vs De Miser (Ghana) — AWC Heavyweight Title Challenge
Congolese USA Bing vs Major Ariba (Nigeria) — AWC Cruiserweight Title Defense
Power Vic (Akwa Ibom State) vs Misterio 619 (Enugu State) — Peace and Unity International Cup
In addition, NPWF will host foreign trainers from the United Kingdom and the United States to mentor young Nigerian aspiring to become professional wrestlers. This will open doors for them to pursue international careers and positive life choices.
Championing Youth, Honouring Legacy
This event will immortalise the achievements of Power Mike of Africa, the first African to win a world heavyweight title and founder of Power Mike International Promotions in 1976. It also embodies the NPWF’s commitment to using sports as a vehicle for youth empowerment, skill acquisition and community development.
“Sports grow with good governance,” Chief Uche noted. “In Anambra, we want more roads, bridges, youth empowerment, fun cities, modern stadiums and indoor sports halls. Bringing this championship to Anambra is our way of supporting Governor Soludo’s governance projects.”
