There's palpable tension as Anambra state Governor Soludo has commenced demolition activities at the Onitsha Main Market despite an existing court order restraining such action.

Eyewitnesses said demolition equipment and security operatives were seen around parts of the market early hours of Sunday 1st March, sparking panic among traders and shop owners.

The development comes days after a High Court ruling ordered that the status quo be maintained pending the determination of a substantive suit filed by market stakeholders.

Traders have expressed panic and confusion over the alleged move, with some describing it as a disregard for judicial authority. Others called for calm while awaiting official clarification from the state government.

Security presence in the area has reportedly increased, as authorities monitor the situation to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Also, the state government has stated that the development is necessary to restructure, modernize, and harmonize the Main Market in line with its urban renewal agenda. According to officials, the exercise is aimed at improving sanitation, decongesting overcrowded sections, enhancing security, and creating a more organized trading environment that meets modern standards.
