The statement
Throwback Times Nigeria has learnt that traders at the popular Onitsha Main Market are currently in panic and distress following a final demolition notice issued by the Onitsha North Local Government Council.
In an official statement dated 26th February 2026 and signed by the Mayor/Chairman, Hon. Anthony Nwora, the council said that all illegal structures located at Park 1, Park 2, and Park 3 of the Main Market have been marked for demolition.
According to the notice, the affected owners and occupants had earlier been given a 14-day demolition notice, which expired on 14th February 2026. Following appeals from the traders, the deadline was extended by another 14 days, set to expire on 28th February 2026.
The council stated that demolition of the identified illegal structures will commence anytime from Sunday, 1st March 2026.
“All those who still have any valuables in those structures are advised to remove such items before Sunday, 1st March 2026,” the statement warned.
The development has sparked emotional reactions among traders, many of whom say they are unprepared for the demolition. Some expressed fears of heavy financial losses and disruption to their businesses.
The move is seen as part of broader enforcement and urban restructuring efforts under the administration of Anambra State Governor, his Excellency Charles Chukwuma Soludo.
As the deadline approaches, uncertainty looms over thousands of traders operating within the affected sections of the market.
