Throwback Times Nigeria has learnt that the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defence has confirmed that its air defence systems intercepted several aerial threats launched from Iran, as tensions in the region continue to rise.
In a statement posted on its official X account on Saturday, the ministry said its defence systems engaged nine ballistic missiles and 33 drones (UAVs) launched toward the United Arab Emirates on March 14.
The ministry explained that the latest attack is part of a series of hostilities it described as ongoing Iranian aggression.
According to the statement, since the beginning of the conflict, UAE air defence systems have intercepted 294 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and about 1,600 drones launched from Iran.
Authorities confirmed that the attacks have caused several deaths and casualties among residents and foreign workers. About 141 including Nigerian nationals.
The victims include citizens and workers from several countries such as the UAE, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, the Philippines, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Yemen, Uganda, Eritrea, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Comoros, Türkiye, Iraq, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Jordan, Palestine, Ghana, Indonesia and Sweden.
The UAE government said its armed forces remain on high alert and are fully prepared to respond to any further threats to the country's security and territorial integrity.
Officials reaffirmed that the military would continue to protect residents and defend the nation's sovereignty against any future attacks.
