It is quite true that Nigerians appreciate throwback songs than today's songs. This is according to results of our questionnaires which tried to elicit reactions from Nigerians in respect of which era made the best music and 90 percent of the response says old songs are the best.
The old songs of Nigeria passed through lots of evolution such as in lyricals and instrumentals. Example, in the 1960s, most of the musicians craft-made their music instruments, example is the likes of Sir Victor Uwaifo, Dan Satch of Aba, Prince Nico Mbarga, among others. When you listen to their songs you'll have perception of real thing because everything is original, that is to tell you that those musicians of olden days really suffered in all round so as to get at the top.
It is unquestionable that modern music is a quite different ball game in all genre especially in Highlife and afropop music. There are many reasons why people choose to listen to old songs even most musicians of today still steal old songs with distinct melody.
There are reasons why old songs is quite appreciated by the public:
1. Originality:
The music of the olden days are real and original. This is reflected on their instrumentals and lyrics, then everyone records with live instruments instead of digital instruments like we have them today. E.g then musicians record with live band but today's musicians record with an Android band and every the likes.
2. Meaningfulness:
Most lyrics of old musicians are meaningful, the sing to solve problems and as well as help the voiceless such as in Fela Anikulapo Kuti's musical products, he defends the political rights of average Nigerian, dive into social or religious crisis and inshort, he uses his songs to convey important message. Furthermore, there are other musicians of the olden days who has characters in their songs example is Oriental Brothers music group, Chief Osita Osadebe, Oliver De Coque, Bright Chimezie, etc.
3. They're Not Afraid To Get Sued:
The musicians of the olden days, including record labels are not really afraid to get sued that's why they say nothing but the truth in their lyrics without fear or favor. And consequently, many of them are today ex prisoner, example is Fela Anikulapo Kuti, others.
4. Passion:
Olden days musicians sing with passion. They're passionate about their career, they sacrifice everything to make sure they get at the top unlike the musicians of nowadays.
