The President-General of the African Professional Wrestling Commission (APWC) Kwabena Nana has commended professional wrestling promoters across Africa for their continued efforts to develop and sustain the sport despite numerous challenges facing the industry.
In a joint statement released by the Commission, the APWC President-General recognized the contributions of wrestling promoters in South Africa, Uganda, Egypt, Nigeria and other African countries, noting that their steady dedication to keep professional wrestling alive decades after the passing of some of the continent's pioneering wrestling figures.
The statement paid tribute to legendary African professional wrestling pioneers, including Gambia Masambula, Power Mike and Honey Boy Zimba, whose contributions helped establish professional wrestling as a major form of sports and entertainment across Africa.
According to the Commission, the continued activities of promoters and wrestling organizations across Africa demonstrate that the legacy of the pioneers is still being carried forward by a new generation.
The APWC Representative in Nigeria, Hon. Fidelis Kene Chiekezie, who also serves as Southeast Director of the Nigeria Professional Wrestling Federation (NPWF), informed the Commission that Nigerian wrestling promoters have continued to do their best despite significant challenges, particularly limited sponsorship and financial support.
Chiekezie emphasized that the Nigerian professional wrestling industry requires greater corporate sponsorship, institutional support and private-sector investment to unlock its full potential.
He also acknowledged the contribution of his colleague, Olusesan Olukoya of Pro Wrestling Africa (PWA), describing his efforts as valuable to the promotion and development of professional wrestling in Nigeria and Africa.
APWC Strengthens Its Nigerian Representation
Hon. Fidelis Kene Chiekezie has also appointed key personnel to support his activities and representation of the Commission in Nigeria.
Among those appointed are Hon. Nwachukwu Mike Chinasa, representing the NPWF Abia State Chapter, and Barr. Happiness Chikezirim, who serves as his Personal Secretary.
The APWC says the continued collaboration among wrestling promoters, federations, administrators and stakeholders across African countries will be crucial to building a stronger and more organized professional wrestling industry on the continent.
With renewed efforts from countries including Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Egypt, African professional wrestling continues to build on the foundation laid by its pioneers while creating opportunities for a new generation of wrestlers, promoters and industry professionals.
